Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, has unveiled a new initiative set to revolutionize the country’s approach to welcoming caregivers. The new permanent residency-on-arrival program for caregivers is slated to launch by the end of 2024 or early 2025. This program is designed to replace the expiring Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot, enhancing Canada’s efforts to meet its home care needs.
An Upgrade to Existing Programs
The upcoming permanent residency-on-arrival program represents a significant upgrade to the current caregiver pilot programs. This initiative allows caregivers to obtain permanent residency upon arrival in Canada, without the previously required work experience in the country. Additionally, it permits caregivers to work for organizations that provide temporary or part-time care for individuals who are semi-independent or recovering from injuries or illnesses.Key Features of the New Program
The new program aims to streamline the process for caregivers entering Canada, offering several benefits:- Permanent Residency Upon Arrival: Caregivers will be granted permanent resident status as soon as they arrive in Canada, eliminating the need for a period of work experience.
- Work Flexibility: Caregivers can work for various organizations, enhancing their employment opportunities.
- Simplified Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must achieve a minimum level 4 on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), hold the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma, have recent and relevant work experience, and receive a full-time home care job offer.
