Canada has long been a favored destination for Nigerians seeking new opportunities, and the data speaks for itself. Between 2005 and 2024, over 71,459 Nigerians have obtained Canadian citizenship, according to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This significant number places Nigeria in the 10th position on the list of new Canadian citizens by country of birth, highlighting the strong migration ties between the two nations.

A Diverse New Citizen Population

IRCC, the department responsible for immigration, refugees, and citizenship in Canada, has revealed that new Canadians come from at least 196 countries and territories. However, nearly half of all new citizens hail from the top 10 countries, underscoring the diversity of Canada’s new citizen population.

Irene Bloemraad, a political sociologist and migration expert, emphasized the benefits of high levels of citizenship. “Research shows a correlation between holding citizenship and better economic outcomes,” Bloemraad told CTVNews. “Canada stands out among other immigrant-receiving countries in the very high level of citizenship among immigrants in the country.”

The Benefits of Canadian Citizenship

Bloemraad further explained that citizenship is linked to a greater sense of belonging and the ability to participate in elections and have a say in policy. This inclusive approach to immigration has positioned Canada as a leader in welcoming and integrating new citizens from around the globe.

Leading Sources of New Canadians

India leads the pack as the top source of new Canadian citizens since 2005, with 536,279 individuals obtaining citizenship. The Philippines follows closely with 395,694 new citizens, and China takes third place with 292,325. Other countries making significant contributions include Pakistan (180,999), Iran (130,998), the United States (99,652), the United Kingdom (98,837), Syria (72,706), and South Korea (71,939).

Nigeria’s Growing Presence

Nigeria’s 71,459 new citizens underscore the country’s significant presence within Canada’s multicultural landscape. Al Parsai, a Toronto-based immigration consultant, noted, “The consistent number of new citizens from countries like India and the Philippines reflects their significant contributions to the Canadian labor market and society. The rise in new citizens from countries experiencing conflict, like Syria and Ukraine, highlights Canada’s role in providing refuge and support to those in need.”

Canada’s Commitment to Multiculturalism

Parsai added, “The fact that new citizens come from nearly 200 different countries and territories showcases Canada’s global appeal and inclusive immigration policies.” This commitment to multiculturalism and diversity is a core element of Canada’s identity and immigration strategy.

Future Immigration Plans

In November 2023, Canada announced an ambitious new immigration-level plan targeting skilled workers, caregivers, families, and other classes. The Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) stated that the country aims to admit 485,000 new immigrants in 2024. By 2025 and 2026, Canada plans to welcome 500,000 new immigrants each year.

These plans encompass economic, family, refugee, and humanitarian classes, reflecting Canada’s holistic approach to immigration. The steady influx of new citizens from diverse backgrounds is set to continue shaping Canada’s social and economic landscape for years to come.
